General Information
The Government Printing Office (GPO) in Washington, D.C., is the largest
general printing plant in the world. Although the GPO is a Legislative
Branch agency, most of our positions are in the competitive civil service.
Candidates for positions in GPO must compete through the Office of Personnel
Management (OPM) either directly (e.g., written test) or indirectly by
having their application/resume rated and ranked by OPM.
GPO keeps America informed. GPO ensures the public's right to access
government information by collecting, organizing, maintaining, preserving
and disseminating it. For 144 years, the GPO has produced and distributed
Federal Government information products. Currently, the GPO captures,
stores, authenticates, produces, and disseminates information from
Congress and other Federal publishers for the public to access directly
and through the Federal Depository Library Program.
GPO employs approximately 3,500 persons with about half of them
in the graphics arts and related blue collar occupations. The remainder
consist of professional, administrative, technical, and clerical
employees who are engaged in diverse occupations. The majority are
employed in the Washington, D.C., area. However, we have regional
procurement offices and bookstores located throughout the country;
a regional printing plant in Denver; and a distribution center in
Pueblo, Colorado.
